- The earliest form of the bicycle appeared in Germany in 1817.
- It had no pedals, so riders had to push themselves along with their feet.
- Pedals were added to the front wheel several decades later.
- The so-called penny farthing had an enormous front wheel and was quite dangerous.
- The safety bicycle, introduced in the 1880s, had two wheels of equal size.
- The invention of the air-filled tyre made cycling far more comfortable.
- As a result, bicycles became affordable for ordinary working people.
- Cycling also gave women a new sense of freedom and independence.
- Today, many cities are investing heavily in cycle lanes to reduce traffic.
