- Coral reefs cover only a tiny fraction of the ocean floor.
- Yet they support around a quarter of all marine species.
- Corals are actually tiny animals that live in large colonies.
- When the water becomes too warm, corals lose their colour and may die.
- This process is known as coral bleaching.
- Pollution from farming can also damage reefs near the coast.
- Some scientists are growing young corals in underwater nurseries.
- These corals are then carefully planted back onto damaged reefs.
- However, this is expensive and can only protect small areas.
