- Today's lecture focuses on the relationship between sleep and memory.
- For a long time, scientists believed the brain was inactive during sleep.
- We now know that sleep plays a vital role in storing new information.
- During deep sleep, memories are transferred to long-term storage.
- In one experiment, participants learned a list of words before sleeping.
- Those who slept for 8 hours remembered significantly more words.
- By contrast, students who stayed awake all night performed poorly.
- These findings have important implications for how students revise.
- Next week, we'll examine the effects of sleep on emotional health.
