- Noise pollution receives far less attention than air or water pollution.
- However, it can have serious effects on both people and wildlife.
- The main sources of noise in cities are traffic, aircraft and construction.
- Long-term exposure to noise has been linked to stress and heart disease.
- It can also make it difficult for children to concentrate at school.
- Birds in noisy cities have been found to sing at a higher pitch.
- Planting trees along busy roads can help to absorb some of the sound.
- Some cities have introduced quiet zones where traffic is restricted.
- Quieter road surfaces are another promising solution.
